A special note: We've chosen to
market only the 4-stroke Tohatsu engines and not the TLDI models. This
decision was based solely on the needs of our business, our customer base,
and our expertise; it was not made on the basis that we thought the TLDI
product was somehow inferior (and by all reports it's actually quite good).
Because Tohatsu may not be a familiar name to some of our
customers we've included the information below from Tohatsu. They also
market the same engines under the Nissan brand name in North America.
In addition they manufacture many the Mercury 4-stroke portable engines.
We've represented the engines for several years now (close to 9) and we've
found them to be extremely reliable with almost no warranty claims (oddly
enough, the warranty issues we have dealt with have been on engines
purchased online).
Founded on October 20th 1922,
Tohatsu Corporation, then named Takata Motor Research Institute,
manufactured railcars. R&D of high-speed portable engine generators and
radio controlled generators began immediately and were brought to
production in 1930. During the1930's and 40's, Tohatsu consolidated its
product line and moved its corporate office to Tokyo. In 1950, production
and sales of motorcycles began.
1955 brought aggressive growth to Tohatsu. Capital increased to 150
million yen, production on a new line of engines started, sales offices
were established in Fukuoka, Nagoya, Tokyo, Sendai and Sapporo and dealers
were located throughout Japan.
1956 ushered in the production of Tohatsu Outboards with the "OB-2", an
air-cooled 1.5 hp outboard. Since then, Tohatsu outboards have capably
served a variety of marketplaces: commercial fishing, marine transport,
recreation and competition.
In January 2005, Tohatsu opened a new state-of-the-art manufacturing plant
in the mountainous area of central Japan that boasts over 370,000 sq. ft.
of space and has a production capacity of over 200,000 units per year.
Tohatsu's new plant uses technologically advanced machinery that is fully
automated to produce reliable outboards with award winning reputations.
Tohatsu America Corp. is the distributor of Tohatsu
outboard motors in the U.S. and Canada. The company is owned and managed
by Japan-based Tohatsu Corporation, one of the world’s largest outboard
motor manufacturers with distribution in over 100 countries.
Model Description
Tohatsu 2.5 / 3.5
- This is Tohatsu's smallest four-stoke engine weighing in at 41 pounds.
Both of these engines have a "neutral & forward" gear shift and a .26 gal (1
liter) integral fuel tank. The 3.5 is allowed to spin a bit more rpm
at wide open throttle to produce the extra horsepower.
Tohatsu 4 / 5 /
6 - These engines all share the same block; the
horsepower differences are in the carburetion. All feature
through-the-hub exhaust and forward-neutral-reverse gear shifting. The
4 hp model features an integral .34 gallon (1.3 liter) fuel tank with
a fitting on the engine for connection to an external fuel tank. The
5 hp and 6 hp models are set up for connection to an external
tank only. These engine weight about 55 pounds.
NEW! Tohatsu MFS 6BUL Sail
Pro - This is a 6 hp lightweight 4-stroke with a 25" extra long
shaft length and a high thrust propeller perfect for sailboats. This
model is equipped with a 5A alternator as standard equipment and also comes
with a 3-gallon fuel tank (or can be plumbed to a larger on-board tank).
Tohatsu 8 / 9.8 -
These two engines share the same block; the horsepower difference is in
carburetion. The 9.8 hp Tohatsu is among the lightest of the 4-stroke
portable outboards and features and outstanding throttle system. The
engines are available in a variety of configurations with short, long, or
extra long (9.8 only) shaft lengths and with manual or electric starting (a
6-amp alternator is standard on electric start models). Due to it's
light weight and smooth throttle system the 9.8 is a particularly good
"kicker" motor. It's also a good dinghy motor; the 9/9.8 short shaft
manual start engine is just 82 pounds.
Tohatsu 15 / 20 -
Sharing the same block and weighing about 114 pounds these engines are a
good choice as a larger "kicker" engine, on a larger inflatable, or on a
skiff. They're available as electric start or manual start models in
15" (short) and 20" (long) shaft lengths. A 12-amp alternator is
standard on electric start models. NEW! MFS 15/20 with
Power Tilt features a compact and light transom bracket. These are
electric start models but retain the manual starter as well for backup.
Tohatsu 25 / 30 -
These are EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) models!
These are the largest Tohatsu 4-stroke engines weighing in
about 180 pounds and available in short (15") and long (20") shaft lengths.
Some models are also available with power tilt.
